INSIUP DUO-2 (SR)

INSIUP DUO-2 (SR) is a combination oral antidiabetic formulation that effectively manages Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. It combines Glimepiride, a sulfonylurea derivative, and Metformin, a biguanide, in a single sustained-release tablet for optimal blood glucose control.

This dual-acting formulation helps in reducing elevated blood sugar levels, improving insulin sensitivity, and promoting better glycemic control. Designed for convenient once or twice daily administration, INSIUP DUO-2 (SR) supports long-term diabetes management while reducing the risk of complications such as neuropathy, nephropathy, and retinopathy.

Mechanism of Action

The combination of Glimepiride and Metformin provides complementary and synergistic control of blood glucose:

• Glimepiride (2 mg): A sulfonylurea that stimulates the pancreatic beta cells to release insulin, thereby reducing blood sugar levels. It also enhances peripheral glucose uptake and utilization.
• Metformin (500 mg SR): A biguanide that reduces hepatic glucose production and improves insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues. The sustained-release formulation ensures gradual drug release, minimizing gastrointestinal side effects and maintaining steady plasma levels.

Together, these agents target both insulin resistance and insulin secretion deficiency, providing comprehensive control of blood glucose levels.

Indications for Use

INSIUP DUO-2 (SR) is indicated for:

• Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (non-insulin-dependent diabetes).
• Patients inadequately controlled by diet, exercise, or monotherapy with either Glimepiride or Metformin.
• Maintenance therapy in patients requiring combination treatment for stable glycemic control.

Dosage and Administration

• The usual recommended dose is one tablet once or twice daily, preferably with meals or as directed by the physician.
• Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew.
• Dosage should be individualized based on blood glucose response and tolerance.
• Regular monitoring of blood glucose and HbA1c is advised during therapy.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

• Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
• Gastrointestinal discomfort, such as nausea or mild diarrhea
• Metallic taste or loss of appetite
• Dizziness or fatigue
• Skin reactions (rare)

Serious but rare side effects like lactic acidosis (from Metformin) or severe hypoglycemia (from Glimepiride) may occur in susceptible individuals; immediate medical attention is advised in such cases.
