Povidone- Iodine 5.0 % Ointment – The medication is used to prevent and treat skin infections in minor cuts, scrapes, burns, and surgical sites. It releases iodine to kill bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. Povidone-Iodine comes in various formulations such as solution, gel, and ointment, for wound care and surgical preparation.

It is an antiseptic and disinfectant agent. Povidone-Iodine is a stable complex of iodine and polyvinylpyrrolidone made to deliver effective antiseptic action. The medication works by slow release of iodine, which kills or prevents the growth of microorganisms. Apply the ointment to clean skin. Daily application of the ointment will give you the best results. Do not use the medication more than you need, as it will not give you a faster recovery; instead may cause some side effects.

How does Povidone-Iodine Ointment work?

Povidone-Iodine works as an antiseptic by slowly releasing potent, free iodine when applied to the skin. Polyvinylpyrrolidone acts as a carrier that holds onto the Iodine(I2). When the solution comes in contact with skin, this complex slowly releases free Iodine over time. This released iodine quickly penetrates into the microbial cells. Within the cell, Iodine oxidizes and iodinates crucial components, including cell membranes, RNA/DNA, and proteins. This disrupts all the essential cellular functions, leading to death of microorganisms.
